Tal Afar is the military key to the Nineveh Plain and the province’s desert. It’s also a vital transport center that controls the road between Mosul and Syria. And to further emphasize on its strategic importance, the Iraqi military institution has paid interest in it at an earlier time after the establishment of the modern Iraqi state and built a permanent camp and a military airport there.
As for ISIS, they used Tal Afar as a logistics platform and a base for movements, maneuverability, resupply and launch of attacks on the armed forces and their supply lines in an attempt to drag the region into a guerrilla warfare of depletion, which emphasizes the need to speed up its liberation in order to complete the liberation of Nineveh and move on to the page of controlling the border with Syria and clearing out the desert…
