The dead angles that ISIS sneaked through and executed the terrorist attack in New Baghdad at the evening of this January 11th are the negligence and inadvertence in managing blind spots through security procedures.
The attack’s objectives:
- Break the security equation assigned to the securing and maintaining stability in Baghdad.
- An attempt to push the capital into a whirlpool of violence and terror to evoke tension and stress among the civilians.
- The bloody attack style expresses the depth of the crisis, and frustration that ISIS is suffering from.
- The attack is an attempt by ISIS to make up for their defeat in Al-Ramadi and a failed effort to bring back balance to the broken spirit of their fighters.
- Affecting the combat state of Baghdad’s operation leadership, by targeting their troops in Al-Karmah, Al-Tharthar, and Nazem Al-Takseem, just like what happened in the attacks taking place at the evenings of January 5th and 6th while keeping the security facilities in the capital busy with large-scale terrorist attacks.
- Divert the attention from the war against terrorism by subjecting more than one front to attacks, which implies the change in ISIS’s tactics gradually shifting into a war of attrition and returning to wide scale guerrilla warfare combat style.
Dangerous terrorist cells
Possibly, the most dangerous highlight in the New Baghdad incident is that it revealed the existence of hidden terrorist cells that lay low within their nests waiting for a chance of or an opening to attack overcrowded civilian targets. This is a security glitch and a critical challenge that requires serious and thorough Intelligence effort around the clock and the reformulation of plans based on new developments and data on the struggle against ISIS and the war against terrorism which is expected to witness an escalation during the coming phase.
Who’s responsible?
As for the one responsible of this breach, the security systems take the blame for what happened. However it is worth mentioning for fairness sake in this matter, the appraisal of the security procedures implemented during the incident and the quick state of emergency during the situation, showing coherence and commitment in the fighting formations that worked to contain and prevent any possible fallouts of this criminal incident. And this is a point in favor of the Baghdad operation leadership and the civilians that showed great cooperation with the security systems.
May Allah have mercy on the victims and honor them with his grace, and we pray for a quick recovery for the wounded. We call out to the country’s organizations to quickly compensate the families of the innocent people that fell victim to this criminal terrorist attack.
